When my love of penguins began… by Kalliopi Markopoulou

I was born and raised in a suburb of Athens. My father used to work on cargo ships when he was younger. I still remember the stories about the real and imaginary places he visited: Caribbean, Curacao, Patagonia, Iceland, Moluccas, African Horn. The strait of Magellan, he said, had penguins that sounded like donkeys. I asked him to bring a penguin to live with us, inside our bathtub!

Of course, the penguin never came home, but when I was 29, I travelled to Patagonia to see the penguins in their natural habitat. In 2019, I married Thomas on a beautiful island in Greece, and a few months later, we had our honeymoon in Chile and Argentina. There, starting from the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, we arrived on the island of Martillo to see up-close the largest colony of penguins.
